A breathless session saw a quite staggering 23 cars blanketed by just eight tenths of a second with positions changing at almost every moment. Such was the competitiveness that the ballast-laden VW of Jason Plato could only manage 22nd on the grid, although the double champion has cited an as yet unknown problem with his Team BMR RCIB Insurance machine. Jason Plato, right after the race:

Sam Tordoff looked to have stolen pole position from under the nose of Motorbase Performance’s Mat Jackson, with the latter combination going for their first ever P1 in qualifying. Tordoff’s BMW 125i M Sport flashed across the line to move to the summit with just two minutes to go.

Tordoff and Jackson held on to second and third, while WSR’s Rob Collard moved into fourth after recovering from an off-track excursion during one of his late flyers. Gordon Shedden – who had dominated both practice sessions earlier in the day – had to settle for fifth, just 0.005s off the second row pace. It could have been better for the Scotsman but one of his fastest attempts was scuppered when his Honda Yuasa Racing team-mate Matt Neal went off, bringing about one of red flag periods. The 2012 champion shook his head as he returned to the pitlane, possibly in the knowledge that his best opportunity had been wasted.

Regular Knockhill front row starter Rob Austin could only manage sixth this time around, but it still represented his best performance of the season in the Exocet AlcoSense Audi A4. Neal held on to seventh despite his spin.

MG’s Andrew Jordan took eighth with his last attempt also ruined after he ran wide and into the gravel in his Pirtek-backed MG6.

Ninth wouldn’t normally be something to celebrate for Colin Turkington, but the reigning champion was Team BMR RCIB Insurance’s top performer and he also maintained his record of qualifying inside the top ten of every 2015 event. Adam Morgan’s WIX Racing Mercedes was relegated to tenth by Turkington with the duo split by just 0.001s. Unbelievably close gaps continued throughout the order with the likes of Snetterton race winner Jack Goff, Aron Smith and Plato among the notable absentees from the top ten.

Plato was another to abort his last flyer attempt following a trip through the gravel and the double champion had to settle for the lowest grid position in his BTCC career – the championship leader will have it all to do from 22nd on the grid. Plato has suggested, however, that he’ll likely start from the pitlane – as he did at Croft earlier this season – in a bid to grab pole position for race two.

“It was a tough session, there was only a very short window to squeeze the lap TIME I NEEDED»

He continued: «It’s dangerous to expect anything, I knew coming into the weekend that we’d be strong, but to be fair I’ve had to get my head around the circuit, it’s been a long time since I raced here! A few things have changed, the kerbs are different through the chicane for example which makes a big difference. The track was going up and down in grip level, and while it didn’t drop massively it was pretty greasy and in those conditions it’s very easy to make a mistake. I knew that we had to be out there and get that free lap, and we stole it right at the end which is mega really.”

Gordon Shedden made it a significant double in the second practice session as the Scotsman fired out a warning ahead of this afternoon’s Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship qualifying session.

“I think there’s still a little more to come from the car too,”

he said. “It’s important that we do it when it matters though and that’s in qualifying. It’s going okay but I’m sure the others will find some time too.” Honda Yuasa Racing’s Shedden became the first and only driver to break the 52 second barrier in either of the practice sessions and now his Civic Type R, which shed some success ballast coming into the event, looks in particularly good shape for the weekend.

It was another Honda one-two in the second practice session, but maybe not the combination you will have expected as the Independent Eurotech-run Honda Civic of Jeff Smith claimed second. Smith topped FP2 for much of the running but also had to recover from an off-track moment on the very next lap after setting his benchmark.

Despite dropping to second at the finish, Smith was delighted with his progress. “I’m really pleased with that,” he enthused. “I had a bit of a scary moment at the jump after having an off but we won’t dwell on that. The pace is in the car but I actually think there’s more to come from me so that bodes well for this afternoon.”

Smith wasn’t the only driver to return to the track relatively unscathed after a spin as both the Honda of Matt Neal and Ford Focus of Alex Martin also endured moments during the session.

West Surrey Racing again showed well in third, fifth and seventh respectively with championship challenger Sam Tordoff getting the better of his more experienced team-mates Andy Priaulx and Rob Collard.

Mat Jackson and Andrew Jordan proved that they’ll be in the mix again this afternoon with solid top six results in practice.

Adam Morgan, Jason Plato and Tom Ingram completed the top ten order, but with all three facing different challenges. Morgan again left it late to fire his Mercedes A-Class up the order while Plato’s Team BMR RCIB Insurance squad admits it may not be setting the ultimate pace this weekend. Speedworks again broke into the leading ten with Ingram, but its achilles heel seems to be getting much beyond that. Qualifying will determine whether Ingram can haul his Toyota Avensis into the fight for a top six grid berth.

Volkswagen Golf остается «народным» автомобилем европейцев

В июле десятку самых продаваемых моделей на европейском рынке возглавили модели Volkswagen Golf и Polo, за которыми с отрывом в почти 5 000 релизованных экземпляров разместился Ford Fiesta.

Наибольшим спросом у европейцев с начала года пользовался хэтчбек Volkswagen Golf – 292,2 тысячи проданных машин (-6,1%). Кроме того, в десятку самых популярных моделей июля вошли Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus, Renault Clio, Opel Astra, Opel Corsa, Volkswagen Passat, Renault Megane и Peugeot 207.

По итогам семи месяцев 2011 года крупнейшим автомобильным рынком Европы стала Германия, где было продано 1,88 миллиона автомобилей – на 10,4% больше по сравнению с аналогичным периодом прошлого года, пишет «Бигмир-Интернет».

Такие данные содержатся в отчете, подготовленном агентством JATO Dynamics. Как сообщалось ранее, с января по июль этого года включительно в России было продано 1,46 миллиона машин, что стало вторым результатом в Европе.

В пятерку крупнейших европейских рынков также вошли Франция (1,39 миллиона машин, +0,2%), Великобритания (1,161 миллиона автомобилей, -6,7%) и Италия (1,156 миллиона, -12,9 %).

Среди автопроизводителей лидером продаж в Европе по итогам семи месяцев 2011 года стал Volkswagen с результатом 1,02 миллиона автомобилей (+6,6%). Далее следуют Ford (677,9 тысячи машин, -6%) и Renault (644,5 тысячи штук, -11%).

Porsche отзывает спорткары по всему миру из-за ремней безопасности

Компания Porsche объявила об отзыве по всему миру автомобилей семейств 911, Boxster и Cayman. Как сообщает Bloomberg, под действие сервисной кампании подпадают машины 2011 и 2012 модельного года, у которых обнаружены дефектные ремни безопасности.

 

На сервис придется отправиться семи модификациям модели Porsche 911 Carrera, спорткарам Porsche 911 Speedster, Targa, GT3 и Turbo, автомобилям Porsche Boxster, Boxster Spyder и Boxster S, а также среднемоторным купе Cayman, Cayman R и Cayman S. Всего под действие сервисной кампании подпадает 235 машин, реализованных на американском рынке, и еще 652 спорткара, которые были проданы в других странах (их точный список пока не уточняется).

 

Как говорится в сообщении Национальной администрации безопасности дорожного движения США (NHTSA), у отзываемых автомобилей обнаружено «слишком маленькое крепежное отверстие в опорном кронштейне ремня безопасности, из-за чего последний не сможет вращаться относительно соединительного болта так, как предусмотрено конструкцией». Это может привести к тому, что ремень может недостаточно надежно удерживать человека или даже слететь во время аварии.

 

По словам представителей Porsche, никаких травм или несчастных случаев, связанных с данным дефектом, не зафиксировано. В компании также уточняют, что дефектное крепление поставляется фирмой Autoliv.

 

В середине июня текущего года в США также были отозваны 1702 спорткара 911 с центральным креплением колес. У этих машин обнаружили дефект стопорной защелки на ступице, препятствующей потере колеса, даже в том случае, если центральный болт не затянут.

«Мерседес» оснастил электромоторами замки ремней безопасности

Компания Mercedes-Benz разработала автоматически выдвигающиеся из подушек второго ряда сидений замки ремней безопасности. По задумке инженеров, они позволят увеличить число пристегивающихся на задним диване людей и упростят этот процесс для детей.

Принцип работы новинки заключается в следующем: при открытии задних дверей замки ремней безопасности будут автоматически выдвигаться с помощью электромоторчиков на 70 миллиметров, а их корпус станет подсвечиваться светодиодами для того, чтобы замок было проще найти в темноте. После того как ремень будет пристегнут, замок вернется в исходное положение.

Новинка будет объединена с системой превентивной безопасности Pre-Safe, которая в случае возникновения риска аварии подготовит к надуванию подушки, закроет окна и люк, а также установит спинки передних сидений в максимально безопасное положение. Теперь новые замки смогут дополнительно притянуть задних пассажиров к сиденью — в случае опасности корпуса дополнительно «втянутся» в подушку дивана на 40 миллиметров.

После ДТП, когда электроника зафиксирует, что автомобиль прекратил движение и электрика не повреждена, система автоматически расслабит натяжение ремней безопасности, чтобы их было проще отстегнуть.

Голландская компания применила морские спасательные технологии к обычным ремням безопасности. Если автомобиль нырнет под воду, ремни безопасности самостоятельно выпустят всех пассажиров.

 

Существует как минимум одна ситуация, когда ремень безопасности следует немедленно расстегнуть в целях вашей же безопасности. Это падение автомобиля в глубокий водоем. Конечно, риск подобного инцидента весьма скромен. А вот шансы на трагический исход в подобном случае, наоборот, очень высоки. Как подсказывают психологи, наиболее вероятной реакцией у подавляющего большинства людей будет паническое желание выбраться из тонущей машины, в то время как вспомнить о замке ремня безопасности, а затем найти его в условиях цейтнота может оказаться проблематичным. Аналогичная проблема возникает и у спасателей, если пассажиры, не дай бог, окажутся в обмороке.

 

Между тем автоматические системы раскрывания замков всевозможных устройств в воде уже давно существуют и зарекомендовали себя с наилучшей стороны. Именно их и использовали инженеры голландской компании Fijen TMLS, представившие публике «спасательный» ремень безопасности Escape Belt. Индикатором затопления и одновременно «спусковым крючком» является быстрорастворимая в воде таблетка, которая спустя несколько секунд после намокания разблокирует специальный рычаг. Тот в свою очередь вместо человека нажимает на соответствующую кнопку на замке ремня.

 

Разработчики подчеркивают, что использование Escape Belt не доставляет никакого неудобства, а картридж с той самой таблеткой не нужно менять в повседневной эксплуатации авто. Цена на подобное устройство в Европе составляет €29,95.

Audi отзывает родстеры R8 из-за утечки топлива

Концерн Volkswagen объявил об отзыве в США родстеров Audi R8 Spyder в связи с тем, что в них может происходить утечка топлива. Об этом говорится в отчете Национальной администрации безопасности дорожного движения США (NHTSA).

 

Под сервисную кампанию попали автомобили, выпущенные в период с 18 мая 2010 года по 22 июня 2011 года. В них могут перетираться линии топливной системы, что в некоторых случаях приводит к утечке горючего. Это, в свою очередь, может стать причиной возгорания машины. Сколько именно автомобилей планируется проверить, а также коснется ли отзыв родстеров, проданных в других странах, не уточняется.

 

По информации NHTSA, официальная сервисная кампания начнется 22 августа.

 

Отзыв спорткаров станет вторым в США в этом году: в июне о необходимости проверки машин объявила компания Porsche. Тогда в 1702 автомобилях 911 GT2 RS, 911 GT3, 911 GT3 RS, 911 Turbo и 911 Turbo S был обнаружен дефект стопорной защелки на ступице, препятствующей потере колеса, даже если центральный болт не затянут.

 

Кроме того, в 2010 году свои автомобили в США отозвали компании Ferrari и Aston Martin.
